3 de September de 2018The crop is a saccular diverticulum that is part of the esophagus, dividing it into its cervical and thoracic segments. At the entrance of the thorax the esophagus returns to the midline and forms this diverticulum in the ventral part.
The main function of this structure is the reserve of the food consumed, allowing the bird to consume quickly. The food that enters through the peak, is deposited there joined to the secretion, which previously were divided by the peak and together with the mucous secretion of the salivary gland, will be moisturized to facilitate the dissolution and digestion processes in the remaining segments of the gastrointestinal tract.
